چکیده

The theoretical analysis in this chapter connects social psychology's central cognitive constructs, stereotype and self-concept, to its central affective constructs, attitude and self-esteem. In addition to proposing this unified account of social psychology's major theoretical constructs, the chapter seeks to unify the competing affective-cognitive consistency principles of social psychology's classic consistency theories: Heider's (1958) balance theory, Osgood and Tannenbaum's (1955) congruity theory, and Festinger's (1957) cognitive dissonance theory. Initial support for the unified theory comes from experiments that use a new latency-based procedure, the Implicit Association Test (IAT), to obtain indirect measures of implicit attitudes, stereotypes, self-concept, and self-esteem (Banaji & Greenwald, 1995). The IAT's findings reveal patterns of affective-cognitive consistency that are not readily observed with explicit (self-report) measures.

A unified theory of implicit attitudes, stereotypes, self-esteem, and self-concept.

G. Greenwald, D. E. McGhee, & J. L. K. Schwartz. 1998), and (c) social psychology's consistency theories of the 1950s, especially F. Heider's (1958) ba...
